Upcoming Event: Author Talk with Patricia Walsh Chadwick

Upcoming Event: A Talk with Patricia Walsh Chadwick, author of Little Sister: A Memoir
Wednesday, October 23rd, 2019, at 7:30 PM
Perrot Memorial Library

Join us for a discussion with author Patricia Walsh Chadwick on her first book, a memoir entitled Little Sister, that chronicles her unorthodox upbringing. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, Leonard Feeney, a controversial Catholic priest, founded a religious community called The Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This is where the author, her parents, and four siblings, lived a life shielded from the outside world-- without television, radio, newspapers, or any exposure to the events of the day. Little Sister is a tale of resilience and grace that, in riveting prose, describes a surreal childhood and does so without rancor or self-pity.

Upcoming Event: Family Storytelling Concert featuring Tim Lowry

Perrot Memorial Library is proud to present an afternoon of storytelling in memory of our beloved Children's Librarians, Kate McClelland ("Mrs. Mac") and Kathy Krasniewicz ("Mrs. K"). Those who knew Kate and Kathy know how much storytelling was a part of their lives and how they used it to enchant and educate the youth of our community.

We are delighted that storyteller Tim Lowry will be joining us for this special family event, which will be held in Perrot's Children's Wing at 2 PM on Sunday, November 17th, 2019. No tickets are required, but seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. This event is recommended for families with children ages 5 and up.

Not unlike Mr. Toad's wild ride from the classic Wind in the Willows, storyteller Tim Lowry will take you on a road trip adventure in an exciting machine-- his grandfather's Model T Ford, to be exact. Dressed in a duster and goggles, Tim will invite you aboard the Tin Lizzie to hear stories from across the country. Folk tales, tall tales, trickster tales, and spook stories are all clearly marked on the map for a grand tour of these United States.

For more information about Tim Lowry, please visit his website: http://storytellertimlowry.com/

Summer Reading Wrap-up

Thanks to everyone who participated in Youth Services' 2019 summer reading program!

It was a fantastic year for summer reading-- 388 kids signed up and read 1,290 books in total!

This year, Perrot will make a donation based on each book read by our summer readers to the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, CT. Our donation is enough to pay for transportation for 30 students to visit the Museum!

If you were one of our very special participants, you can still keep track of the books you read, even though our "official" program has ended! You can either take your reading record home with you, or leave it here in the library. We will also continue to give out prizes for books read (while supplies last, so HURRY!).

We'd also like to give a special mention to our teen volunteers, who helped record books for our reading program participants. This year we had 66 volunteers, who together worked over 615 hours staffing our summer reading table. Thanks, guys!

And remember, we still have another month of summer left, so please KEEP READING!

Perrot's Summer Reading Club and Contest for Kids

Summer is here-- and that means it's time to sign up for Perrot's summer reading club! You can participate (and win prizes for reading!) going on NOW  through August 1st. The Summer Reading theme this year is A UNIVERSE OF STORIES.

To sign up for our summer reading club, simply visit our volunteer table by the computers in Youth Services. Our friendly teen volunteers will sign you up, tell you the rules and start a reading record for you. You'll also get to put your name up on our bulletin board! We'll keep your reading record here in the library. When you've read a book, tell a volunteer next time you're in the library and they'll write it in your reading record. After you read your first, third, and fifth books, you get a prize! Also, this year, for each book you read, Perrot will make a donation to the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport.

Parents, you can take home a reading record for children who are not yet reading independently. We have special sheets to record books you have read aloud with your child. Children get a sticker for each book they've read with a grown-up.

We're also having a contest this summer. During the first 4 weeks in July, we will have a new jar of candy at the desk each week. Guess how many candies are in the jar, and fill out a guess slip. Whoever's guess is closest wins the whole jar! (If more than one person guesses correctly, we will draw randomly from among all correct answers.)

Adult Summer Reading Challenge 2019

Sign up at the Adult Circulation Desk for Perrot's Adult Summer Reading Challenge 2019! For every book you read (or audiobook or e-book), you will be entered for a chance to win a gift card to a local restaurant! Program is going on now through Labor Day.

Greenwich Reads Together 2019: Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury

Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, has been chosen as the Greenwich Reads Together selection for 2019. Greenwich Reads Together is a community-wide reading experience which engages all of Greenwich in exploring a single book, culminating in a month-long series of special events and programs in the fall.

About the Book:
Sixty years after its original publication, Ray Bradbury’s internationally acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 stands as a classic of world literature set in a bleak future. Today, its message has grown more relevant than ever before.

Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But when he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known.

The New York Times called it “brilliant . . . startling and ingenious . . . Mr. Bradbury’s account of this insane world, which bears many alarming resemblances to our own, is fascinating.”

About the Author:
Ray Douglas Bradbury (1920 – 2012) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, screenwriter, and poet. Born in Waukegan, Illinois, he later graduated from a Los Angeles high school and began selling newspapers on LA street corners from 1938 to 1942, spending his nights in the public library and his days at the typewriter.

His reputation as a writer of courage and vision was established with the publication of The Martian Chronicles in 1950, which describes the first attempts of Earth people to conquer and colonize Mars, and the unintended consequences. Next came The Illustrated Man and then, in 1953, Fahrenheit 451, which many consider to be Bradbury’s masterpiece, a story of censorship set in a future world where the written word is forbidden. In an attempt to salvage their history and culture, a group of rebels memorize entire works of literature and philosophy as their books are burned by the totalitarian state.

Ray Bradbury’s work has been included in four Best American Short Story collections. He has been awarded the O. Henry Memorial Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America, the PEN Center USA West Lifetime Achievement Award, among others. In November 2000, the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters was conferred upon Mr. Bradbury at the 2000 National Book Awards Ceremony in New York City.

Companion Selections for Children:
For middle-schoolers: Ban This Book, by Alan Gratz
For elementary-schoolers: Hands Around the Library: Protecting Egypt's Treasured Books, by Susan L. Roth

Book Discussion on THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST and EXIT WEST by Mohsin Hamid

Perrot Memorial Library and The Greenwich Pen Women present a Book Discussion on THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST and EXIT WEST by Mohsin Hamid

Faciliated by Laurie Heiss of Greenwich Pen Women

Monday, May 13th, 2019, at 7:00 PM

This book discussion is themed around East/West encounters, via two intelligent and provocative novels by an award-winning Pakistani author. Each novel is uniquely constructed, and both are relatively quick reads.

In THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST, we follow the story of Changez, a Pakistani immigrant to the United States whose experiences of discrimination and ignorance cause his alienation. Changez wrestles with infatuation and disenchantment with America.

In EXIT WEST, the main themes are emigration and the refugee crisis, but instead of borders, there are doors. Hamid connects his readers to the lead characters, Saeed and Nadia, representatives of today's 65 million stateless, unwanted people.

Seating is limited! Please call to reserve your spot at the discussion: 203-637-1066.
Copies of the books are available for checkout at the Adult Circulation Desk

Upcoming Event: Book Discussion on World Without Mind, by Franklin Foer

Perrot Memorial Library and the Greenwich Pen Women present a Book Discussion on WORLD WITHOUT MIND: THE EXISTENTIAL THREAT OF BIG TECH, by Franklin Foer

Facilitated by Sarah Darer Littman, President of Greenwich Pen Women

Monday, March 25th, 2019 at 7 PM

Tracing the intellectual history of computer science, Franklin Foer puts the DNA of the very idea of "tech" under the microscope. Google, Facebook, Apple, and Amazon, he argues, are breaking laws intended to protect intellectual property and privacy. He writes, "As these companies have expanded, marketing themselves as champions of individuality and pluralism, their algorithms have pressed us into conformity and laid waste to privacy. They have produced an unstable and narrow culture of misinformation, and put us on a path to a world without private contemplation, autonomous thought, or solitary introspection--a world without mind."

In light of the revelations of interference in the 2016 election through social media, Foer's timely book provides a stepping stone to discuss our willingness to sacrifice privacy for convenience, and if it's time to reexamine the notion that technology will provide the solution.

Copies of the book are available for checkout from the Adult Circulation Desk. Please note that seating for this event is limited!

Upcoming Event: Book Discussion on Behold the Dreamers, with the Greenwich Pen Women

Book Discussion on Behold the Dreamers, by Imbolo Mbue
Facilitated by Diane Tunick Morello of Greenwich Pen Women
Monday, January 28th, 2019, at 7:00 PM in the Rand Room at Perrot
[Snow Date: Monday, February 4th, 2019]

Jende and Neni Jonga arrive in America from Cameroon to make a home with their son, Liomi. After a series of low-skilled jobs, Jende is hired in late 2007 as a chauffeur for a Lehman Brothers executive. Jende and Neni use their improved income to make a home in Harlem, enroll Neni in pharmacy school, and hire an immigration lawyer to help Jende qualify for political asylum and thus remain in the United States.

The American Dream is sweet for them-- until a cascade of events weakens their foundation. Jende and Neni get pummeled by immigration bureaucracy, financial losses, unemployment, and growing resentment from the exectutive and his wealthy family. Jende, ever disillusioned and angry, views America as a land of no opportunity. Neni sees America as her future and fears what will become of her if she follows Jende's path.

Behold the Dreamers is a masterful take on the American Dream, so alluring from afar and so mystifying up close. Fortunately, Imbolo Mbue never lets readers forget that human hearts beat at the center of the story, and we feel both joy and heartache as the Jongas navigate the highs and lows of America. Behold the Dreamers will remain with readers long after the last page, compelling them to ask whether the American Dream is possible for all or only for those born into it.
