Located on 13 acres in Back Country Greenwich, Sleepy Cat Farm represents the creative vision of its owner Fred Landman, who acquired a historic Georgian Revival Home in 1994 and set to work with the help of architect Charles Hilton and landscape architect Charles J. Stick to create "a garden of which the house could be proud."

After a 25-year collaboration, Sleepy Cat Farm features an abundance of garden experiences: formal boxwood and undulating hornbeam hedges, dense woodland, reflecting pools, arbors and follies—and a ferme ornée (ornamental farm) offering organic produce to the community.

A self-taught gardener, Fred Landman serves on the Garden Conservancy’s board of directors, and resides at Sleepy Cat Farm with his wife, Seen Lippert, a professional chef who spent more than a decade at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, CA. Curtice Taylor has been photographing landscapes and gardens for more than forty years. His work has been published in major gardening and shelter magazines including House & Garden, Architectural Digest, and Connecticut Cottages and Gardens. A childhood friend of Fred Landman, Taylor has been documenting the gardens at Sleepy Cat Farm for more than ten years.

Program will be presented in-person at Perrot, and live-streamed via Zoom. In Deacon King Kong, McBride brings to vivid life the people affected by the shooting: the victim, the African-American and Latinx residents who witnessed it, the white neighbors, the local cops assigned to investigate, the members of the Five Ends Baptist Church where Sportcoat was deacon, the neighborhood’s Italian mobsters, and Sportcoat himself.

As the story deepens, it becomes clear that the lives of the characters–caught in the tumultuous swirl of 1960s New York–overlap in unexpected ways. When the truth does emerge, McBride shows us that not all secrets are meant to be hidden, that the best way to grow is to face change without fear, and that the seeds of love lie in hope and compassion.

About the Author:

James McBride is an award-winning author, musician, and screenwriter. His landmark memoir, The Color of Water, published in 1996, has sold millions of copies and spent more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list. Considered an American classic, it is read in schools and universities across the United States.

McBride has been a staff writer for The Boston Globe, People Magazine, and The Washington Post, and his work has appeared in Essence, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. His 2007 National Geographic story “Hip Hop Planet” is considered an important examination of African American music and culture.

A noted musician and composer, McBride has toured as a saxophonist sideman with jazz legend Jimmy Scott, among other musicians. He has written songs for Anita Baker, Grover Washington Jr., Pura Fé, Gary Burton, and even for the PBS television character “Barney.” (He did not write the “I Love You” song for Barney, but he wishes he did.) He received the Stephen Sondheim Award and the Richard Rodgers Foundation Horizon Award for his musical Bobos, co-written with playwright Ed Shockley. His 2003 Riffin’ and Pontificatin’ musical tour was filmed for a nationally televised Comcast documentary. He has been featured on national radio and television in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Check out a copy of the book

View a list of companion selections for Grades K-5 and Young Adults

Click here for more info on Greenwich Reads Together
Perrot Memorial Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00960460717691354167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32471932.post-83560845023991959082021-08-11T14:40:00.007-04:002021-08-11T14:40:31.917-04:00Upcoming Event: Virtual Book Discussion on Night. You can participate (and win prizes for reading!) starting TODAY, through Wednesday, August 4th. The Summer Reading theme this year is TAILS AND TALES!

We will again be using ReadSquared to manage our summer reading program. Simply make an account with ReadSquared, and you can log books read and even review them. (If you made a Perrot ReadSquared account last year, you may reuse your old login information.) After you have read your first, third, and fifth books, you get a prize! After you've read your first book, you get an animal ruler bookmark. When you've finished your third book, you get a gift certificate for a free cookie at Sweet Pea's Baking Company in Old Greenwich. After you've read your fifth book, you get to pick out a brand-new book. When you've earned a prize, please stop in to the library and let us know at the Youth Services Desk!

Parents, you can also set up a ReadSquared account for your child who is not yet reading independently. Once you have logged 20 books read to your child, your child will get to pick out a free book!

Please note: Your Perrot ReadSquared account will be separate from your Greenwich Library ReadSquared account.
