Upcoming Event: Book Discussion on Churchill & Orwell: the Fight for Freedom, by Thomas E. Ricks

Greenwich Pen Women/Perrot Memorial Library Book Discussion Group presents:

Churchill & Orwell: The Fight for Freedom, by Thomas E. Ricks
Facilitated by Sarah Darer Littman of Greenwich Pen Women
Monday, September 24 at 7 pm
Perrot Library Rand Room

By the late 1930's democracy was discredited in many circles, and authoritarian rulers were everywhere in the ascent. There were some who decried the scourge of communism, but saw in Hitler and Mussolini "men we could do business with," if not in fact saviors. Others saw the Nazi and fascist threat as malign, but tended to view communism as the path to salvation. Churchill and Orwell had the foresight to see clearly that the issue was human freedom--that whatever its coloration, a government that denied its people basic freedoms was a totalitarian menace and had to be resisted.

Copies of the book will be available for checkout
from the Circulation Desk beginning on August 24, 2018.
Seating is limited.

Upcoming Event: Keith Michael Johnson's BUBBLEOLOGY!

Keith Michael Johnson presents: Bubbleology
Thursday, July 26th at 4 pm
Perrot Memorial Library Children's Wing
This show is for families with children age 5 and up.

As seen on Discovery Channel's "Time Warp", National Geographic TV and on-stage by invitation (twice) at America's largest science and engineering festival in DC, Keith uses bubbles—large and small—to explain liquids, solids and gasses, geometry, tension and pressure.

Keith builds beautiful sculptural creations (massive & miniature) with enthusiasm, humor and style.  One moment he will be encasing a dinosaur in a bubble and in the next moment he's encapsulating an audience volunteer.

Be dazzled by a bubbly Eiffel Tower, a dancing snow-white snow-man and a spinning space ship as it races toward the ceiling!

While those demonstrations snare viewers attention—Keith reveals the science behind the magic, unfolding the "how-to" like a mystery, making it both educational and unforgettable.

Call us (203-637-8802) or stop by the Youth Services Desk to sign up. We are not handing out tickets for this event, but advance sign-up is required.

Town of Greenwich Easten Greenwich Civic Center Survey

Please take a moment to fill out the Town of Greenwich survey on the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center (EGCC)!

Based on the current facility condition and goals for future development, the Town has determined that a new, modern replacement building will provide efficiencies in all aspects of operations that a renovated building cannot provide. Therefore, this project will focus on the development of new facility assets instead of renovating existing facility assets.

This survey is intended to assess the current utilization of the EGCC, the current and unmet recreation needs in the community, and the potential utilization of a new EGCC facility. Responses are anonymous.

Greenwich Reads Together 2018: Code Girls, by Liza Mundy

Code Girls:The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers Who Helped Win World War II, by Liza Mundy, has been chosen as the Greenwich Reads Together selection for 2018. Greenwich Reads Together is a community-wide reading experience which engages all of Greenwich in exploring a single book, culminating in a month-long series of special events and programs in the fall.

About the Book:
Recruited by the U.S. Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than ten thousand women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of code-breaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. A strict vow of secrecy nearly erased their efforts from history; now, through dazzling research and interviews with surviving code girls, bestselling author Liza Mundy brings to life this riveting and vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment.

About the Author:
Liza Mundy is a journalist and author of four books, most recently Code Girls. She is a former staff writer for the Washington Post, where she specialized in long-form narrative writing, winning a number of awards. Her 2012 book, The Richer Sex, was named a top non-fiction book of 2012 by the Washington Post and a noteworthy book by the New York Times Book Review. Her 2008 book, Michelle, a biography of First Lady Michelle Obama, was a New York Times best-seller and has been translated into 16 languages. She writes widely for publications including The Atlantic, Politico, The New York Times, Slate, and TIME. She has appeared on The Colbert Report, The Today Show, GMA, CBS This Morning, MSNBC, CNN, C-Span, Fox News, Democracy Now, Bloggingheads TV, NPR’s Weekend Edition, and many more TV and radio shows. A senior fellow at New America a non-partisan thinktank, Liza has an AB from Princeton University and an MA in English literature from the University of Virginia. Every year dozens of worthy titles are submitted by Greenwich residents for consideration for Greenwich Reads Together. Annually, the Greenwich Reads Together Selection Committee winnows the field down to roughly four exceptional books. And every year the committee vociferously debates and makes a final decision on which book will become the Greenwich Reads Together title.

But 2018 is special.

This year the Greenwich Reads Together Selection Committee is placing the power with the people and asking our community to make the final decision on what it wants to read and discuss for Greenwich Reads Together, the community-wide reading experience which engages all of Greenwich in exploring a single book.

Residents may vote among the ‘final four’ titles via online poll NOW through April 27 by visiting www.greenwichreadstogether.org.  The wining title will be announced in May.

Choosing among the four will be difficult, but there’s no wrong way to decide. A choice could be made based on how well the book meets the official selection criteria or on how much community discussion the book might generate. Some people may simply choose the book they most want to read.

In order to be selected as a ‘final four’ title, the book had to be of literary quality, reflective of universal issues and capable of generating thought-provoking discussions. It had to lend itself to engaging public programs and appeal to a diverse population. It had to be currently in print and available in large quantities and in multiple formats, including ebook, audiobook and large print. In addition, the author had to be alive and available to speak in Greenwich.

Greenwich Reads Together 2018 will take place in the fall.

The Final Four are as follows. Detailed descriptions and author bios can be found within the survey form and at www.greenwichreadstogether.org.

Exit West, by Mosin Hamid
Janesville: An American Story, by Amy Goldstein
Behold the Dreamers, by Imbolo Imbue

A Gentleman in Moscow tells the story of Count Alexander Rostov, who is sentenced to live in the Metropol, a grand hotel in Moscow, for the rest of his life. It is 1922, and a Bolshevik tribunal decides he has written a poem which will encourage revolt. The Count has been living in the same hotel with an aristocratic lifestyle, but is now moved to a much smaller attic room where he has to assume a simpler way of life.

From within the confines of the hotel, the reader sees how life in Moscow changes over four decades. We witness the destruction of the Russian aristocracy and the rise of Communism.

The story of Count Alexander Rostov will entice you throughout the novel as he manages to survive and find meaning through a series of unusual circumstances. The count perseveres and keeps to his routine until he meets someone who will change his life.

Amor Towles creates characters whose lives are quirky and interesting, and he brings the sights and sounds of Moscow in the 1920's and 1930's alive for the reader. He creates a cinematic experience with his elaborate scenes and descriptions of clothing and decor.

This novel was a bestseller, and when you meet Count Alexander Rostov, you will see why this is true.

Copies of the book will be available for checkout at the Adult Circulation Desk beginning on April 7th. Seating for the event is limited!

Hag-Seed, by award-winning novelist Margaret Atwood, is a retelling of Shakespeare's play, The Tempest. The novel, one in a series from the Hogarth Shakespeare Project, is described by the New York Times Book Review as a "marvel of gorgeous yet economical prose, in the service of a story that's utterly heartbreaking yet pierced by humor, with a plot that retains considerable subtlety even as the original's back story falls neatly into place."

About the Book: Felix is at the top of his game as artistic director of the Makeshiweg Theater Festival. His productions have amazed, and now he is about to stage a Tempest like no other: not only will it raise his reputation, it will heal emotional wounds.

That was the plan, but after an act of unforeseen treachery, Felix is living in exile. He is haunted by the memories of his beloved lost daughter, Miranda, and is determined to exact his revenge.

After twleve years, revenge finally arrives when Felix signs on to teach a theater course at a nearby prison. Here, Felix and his inmate actors will put on his Tempest and snare the traitors who destroyed him-- it's magic! But will it remake Felix as his enemies fall?

About the Project: The Hogarth Shakespeare Project presents the Bard's works through an imaginative retelling by some of the world's most esteemed novelists. Launched in 2015, books are planned through 2021. Current plans include publication in 20 countries. See www.hogarthshakespeare.com for further details.
