Upcoming Event: Virtual Book Discussion on What Unites Us, by Dan Rather

Perrot Memorial Library & The Greenwich Pen Women
present a Virtual Book Discussion on
What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism
by Dan Rather and Elliot Kirschner
Facilitated by Diane Tunick Morello of Greenwich Pen Women
Monday, January 25th, 2021 at 7 PM via Zoom

As the United States prepares to inaugurate a president after the divisive 2020 election, our better angels are begging for our attention, begging us to refocus our intentions on our country and what it stands for. In that spirit, Perrot Memorial Library and The Greenwich Pen Women offer What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism as the first book discussion of 2021.

Through essays, profiles and personal experiences, intrepid journalist Dan Rather and his collaborator, Elliot Kirschner, examine patriotism through the dimensions of freedom, community, exploration, responsibility and character. Each section, each vignette, each story seeks to lift our national conversation out of our entrenched differences and to focus instead on shared values and experiences underpinning patriotism in America.

Dan Rather sets the stage eloquently:

Perhaps the path to what unites us could be paved with a recommitment to citizenship. ... Our times require a modern sense of citizenship. Citizenship is not merely a collection of conferred rights but a compact with each other to work for the well-being of all, to engage with our civic institutions, to support our schools, the democratic process, and the health of our environment.

What Unites Us is a mother lode of challenging and inspirational discussions, with stories and images that remain in our heads and hearts. Bring your favorite passage or experiences to an adult conversation on patriotism, citizenship and the experiment that is the United States of America.

Upcoming Event: Screening of Just Mercy at the Avon Theatre

Screening of JUST MERCY

at The Avon Theatre Film Center, Stamford

cosponsored by the Perrot and Greenwich Libraries

Wednesday, October 28th, 2020, at 7 PM

Purchase tickets via the Avon

Perrot and Greenwich Libraries present this screening of JUST MERCY, the movie adaption of the book JUST MERCY, by Bryan Stevenson, which is one of the 2020 Greenwich Reads Together selections. Advance tickets must be purchased through the Avon.

Michael B. Jordan and Oscar winners Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson star in JUST MERCY, an inspiring drama that brings one of the most important stories of our time to the big screen. Award-winning filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote, based on the award-winning nonfiction bestseller by Bryan Stevenson. A powerful and thought-provoking true story, JUST MERCY follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley. One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian, who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds—and the system—stacked against them.

This in-person event will follow strict health protocols. Everyone who attends must wear a mask and their temperature will be taken when they enter the theater.

Upcoming Event: Zoom Book Discussion on Just Mercy

Perrot Memorial Library & The Greenwich Pen Women
present a Zoom Book Discussion on
Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption
by Bryan Stevenson
A Greenwich Reads Together 2020 Selection
Facilitated by Adrienne Reedy of Greenwich Pen Women

Through personal stories, Bryan Stevenson lets us take a close look at our nation’s judicial system and elucidates the travails of poor black men who are unjustly placed on death row. Thankfully, through DNA testing, technology helps prove the innocence of many of his cases. Through perseverance and grit, Mr. Stevenson has made it his life’s mission to answer the question, "Is justice for all?"  As founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, he has given hope to many who otherwise would be dead or unjustly left behind prison bars. His work has awakened the consciousness of men and women across our country, to look critically at our prison system and the inherent racial biases that impact its structures. Just Mercy provides altering perspectives on how we can become a more just society in how we handle the mentally ill, law, and restorative justice as part of prison reform.

Greenwich Reads Together 2020 Selections

For the first time ever, Greenwich Reads Together will explore not just one book, but two! Both books explore themes that have been especially prevalent in the last year, public health and racial justice.

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, by Bryan Stevenson, is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer’s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice as he founds the Equal Justice Initiative and defends those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system.

In Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World, Pulitzer Prize—winning author Tracy Kidder tells the true story of a gifted man who loves the world and has set out to do all he can to cure it. Paul Farmer found his life’s calling: to cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. Kidder’s magnificent account takes us from Harvard to Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia as Farmer changes minds and practices through his dedication to the philosophy that "the only real nation is humanity."

The Middle School selections are the Young Readers' Editions of Just Mercy and Mountains Beyond Mountains. The Elementary School selections are The Undefeated, by Kwame Alexander, and Manjhi Moves a Mountain, by Nancy Churnin.

We hope you join us this fall in reading both powerful stories and exploring these extremely relevant topics through a number of virtual events. The lineup of programs and events will be announced soon! To check out a copy of the books and find out more about GRT, visit www.greenwichreadstogether.org.

Upcoming Event: Zoom Book Discussion on American Dirt

Perrot Memorial Library & The Greenwich Pen Women
present a Zoom Book Discussion on
American Dirt
by Jeanine Cummins
Facilitated by Kathy DiGiovanna of Greenwich Pen Women

An Editors’ Choice Selection from The New York Times Book Review, as well as a regular entry in Perrot’s Top Ten list of hot books for the last several months, American Dirt is the story of a Mexican mother and her son who are forced to flee their homeland when her husband’s expose on the local drug cartels is published. Here’s what Maureen Corrigan of NPR’s Fresh Air had to say about it: “American Dirt is a literary novel with nuanced character development and arresting language; yet, its narrative hurtles forward with the intensity of a suspense tale. Its most profound achievement, though, is something I never could’ve been told… American Dirt is the novel that, for me, nails what it’s like to live in this age of anxiety, where it feels like anything can happen, at any moment.”

American Dirt is available to check out as a physical copy, an audiobook CD, an ebook, or a downloadable audiobook

Winners of the Perrot Memorial Library's Haiku Contest Announced!

During the COVID-19 crisis, we reached out to the public and asked them to submit haiku--3-line, 17-syllable Japanese-style poems--that described their experience with the pandemic, the closures, and the impact of both on their daily life. The response was terrific! We received over 160 original haiku from people all over the world, ranging in age from 9 to ??? Here is what our judges had to say about the submissions:

"We were struck by the universal themes of fear, love, anger, joy, surprise, sadness and loneliness, and we were intrigued by turns of phrase that demonstrated heart, humor and imagination. In nearly all cases, the haiku were heartfelt and intimate, and some were truly exceptional."

We are very pleased to announce the winners of our haiku contest:

Children

3rd-4th Grade Winner: Arielle Levy, Greenwich, Connecticut

5th-6th Grade Winner: Jingmi Chen, Old Greenwich

7th-8th Grade Winner: Sophia Singh, Denver, Colorado

Teens

First Place: Penelope (Penny) Duran, Frankfurt, Germany

Second Place: Yurika Sakai, Greenwich, Connecticut

Third Place: Divya Shenoy, Riverside, Connecticut

Adult

First Place: Heidi Stein, Mahopac, New York

Second Place: Michael Dudley, Ontario, Canada

Third Place: Susan Russo, Arlington, Virginia

Congratulations to all the winners, and a huge thank you to all those who participated, including our judges who gave of their time and expertise. We will publish all the haiku in a booklet, which will be available in printed form and as a pdf on our web site.

If you have any questions, please contact Judy Sgammato, head of Circulation Services, at 203-637-1066 or at jsgammato@perrotlibrary.org.

When Will the Library Reopen?

When Will the Library Reopen?

The many questions we've received about the Library opening are certainly heartwarming. We're glad to be providing a service that you'd like to see resume. The decision to open our library building will be in accordance with a review and agreement by the Perrot Memorial Library Board of Directors, compliance with guidelines and recommendations by the Greenwich Department of Health and other Town officials, the physical characteristics of our building, and in coordination with the Greenwich Library. Our resources may not allow us to immediately restore the same levels of service we once provided.

Here are some of the things that we need to address before Perrot Library can reopen to the public in a way that is safe for both visitors and staff:
  • Adequate PPE for library staff and visitors
  • Possible limits on the number of people in the building
  • Possible limits on the amount of time visitors spend here
  • Separation of people using computers or study areas
  • Redesign or suspension of events that bring in large groups
  • Redesign or adaptation of places where people interact face-to-face, such as check-out desks or reference services
  • Disinfecting of shared surfaces multiple times every day
  • Installing air purifiers that kill mold, bacteria and viruses in our HVAC systems
We are anxious to return to the high quality personal services that you cherish, but we are now challenged by the need to make radical changes that will significantly alter how we serve you. Before we are ready to open fully, we will continue to help you by phone or e-mail and will expand no-contact services such as virtual programming and curbside delivery.

While libraries have the State's permission to open during Stage Two of the reopening plan, we will not open until we have adjusted the environment to make it safe for all.

For a detailed list of rules and recommendations for reopening Perrot Library, please see: Connecticut Sector Rules for Reopen: Libraries

Summer is here-- and that means it's time to sign up for Perrot's summer reading club for kids! You can participate (and win prizes for reading!) starting TODAY, through Wednesday, August 5th. The Summer Reading theme this year is IMAGINE YOUR STORY!

Because the library is still closed to the public, we will be using ReadSquared to manage our summer reading program. After you read your first, third, and fifth books, you get a prize!  Once you've read your first book, you get a magnetic bookmark. When you read your third book, you can pick either a dragon grabber OR a unicorn headband. After you read your fifth book, you get a brand-new book (this year, we will have to select the book for you)! Once you are eligible for your prizes, please call us (203-637-8802) to set up a time to retrieve them via curbside pickup.

Parents, you can also set up a ReadSquared account for your child who is not yet reading independently. Once you have logged 20 books read to your child, you will get a free book! Once you are eligible for your prize, please call the library to set up a time to retrieve them via curbside pickup.

FAQs on No-Contact Curbside Pickup at Perrot Memorial Library

FAQ's on Non-Contact Curbside Pickup at Perrot Memorial Library

How Does No-Contact Curbside Pickup Work?
Place holds on books and materials in the Library catalog or by calling our librarians at 203-637-1066 (Adult Desk) or 203-637-8802 (Youth Services Desk). Curbside pickup is available on Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 9:30 AM-5:30 PM, Tuesday/Thursday from 9:30 AM-7:30 PM, Saturday from 9:30-4:30 PM, and Sunday from 1:30 PM-4:30 PM. Once your holds are ready, you'll receive an email notification with a link to choose the date and time that you can pick up. When you arrive on your self-selected date/time, please look for a bag labeled with your first name and the first initial of your last name, along with the last four digits of your phone number. Adult/Teen items may be picked up from the table outside our Main Building side entrance; Youth Services items may be picked up on the table outside the Radcliffe Building entrance. For your safety, remain in your car until library staff have returned inside the Library. And, please observe all social distancing rules.

What About the Books I Currently Have Checked Out? Will I Be Fined?
Our book drop has been reopened, but there's no need to rush. Please do not worry about fines. Although we cannot apply a further global extension beyond July 1st for all items still out (without disrupting the loan periods for new checkouts), we have increased the number of renewals to 10, which should give you plenty of time to return your items without charge. If you do incur a late charge during this time, please call Judy Sgammato at 203-637-1066 x15. Our book drop is once again open 24/7, including weekends.

How Will the Books and Materials Be Handled?
To protect our patrons and Library staff, all returned items will be quarantined for 96 hours before being checked in and returned to circulation. Library staff will handle books and materials with PPE, including gloves, masks, and protective gear.

Can I Bring Book Donations?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept book donations at this time, so please do not leave them outside the Library or in our Book Drop.

Are the Perrot Memorial Library Buildings Reopened?
The Perrot Memorial Library buildings continue to be closed to the public until further notice. We continue to plan the next phase of safely reopening our buildings to the Old Greenwich community.

What If I Have More Questions?
Staff are on hand to answer your questions by phone at 203-637-1066 (Adult Desk) or 203-637-8802 (Youth Services Desk), or by email at lending@perrotlibrary.org. Feel free to contact Library staff with any additional No-Contact Pick Up questions at 203-637-1066 or at lending@perrotlibrary.org prior to your arrival. We’ll be happy to answer any questions or concerns!

Upcoming Event: Virtual Book Discussion on "The Dutch House"

Zoom Book Discussion on The Dutch House by Ann Patchett
Facilitated by Sarah Darer Littman of Greenwich Pen Women
Wednesday, June 10th, 2020, at 7 PM

A finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, The Dutch House is a New York Times bestseller and a favorite among Perrot patrons. Here's what Amazon has to say about it: "A richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love, and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are."

Free registration on Zoom.com is required for participation.

Virtual Book Discussion on Machines Like Me

Perrot Library & The Greenwich Pen Women
present Our First-Ever Zoom Book Discussion
on Machines Like Me, by Ian McEwan
Facilitated by Diane Tunick Morello of Greenwich Pen Women
Monday, May 4th, 2020 at 7 PM on Zoom

Meet Adam. Out of the box he is an artificially intelligent man, bought for amusement by Charlie, a drifter, and used as a lure for Charlie’s crush, Miranda, a liar. Adam grows from machine infancy to intellectual superiority as he ingests research, information and theories of business, economies and global history. What he does not understand — what becomes the crux of his new life — are the emotional entanglements, irrational thinking and ethical shortcuts that define human beings.

Free registration on Zoom is required for participation
Machines Like Me is available as an e-book on OverDrive and as an e-audiobook on RBdigital

Haiku Poetry Contest

In honor of National Poetry Month, the Perrot Memorial Library is sponsoring a haiku poetry contest open to students in grades 3 and up, as well as adults. We are seeking original haikus (3-line, 17-syllable poems) describing your experience with COVID-19--the pandemic, the closures, and their impact on your daily life.

What Is a Haiku?

A traditional Japanese haiku is a three-line poem with seventeen syllables, written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. Often focusing on images from nature, haiku emphasizes simplicity, intensity, and directness of expression. [Academy of American Poets – Poets.org]

Here are three examples of haiku poems from Matsuo Basho (1644-1694),  considered the greatest haiku poet:

An old silent pond...
A frog jumps into the pond,
splash! Silence again.

Autumn moonlight-
a worm digs silently
into the chestnut.

In the twilight rain
these brilliant-hued hibiscus -
A lovely sunset.

How Is a Haiku Structured?

1.     There are only three lines, totaling 17 syllables.
2.     The first line is 5 syllables.
3.     The second line is 7 syllables.
4.     The third line is 5 syllables like the first.
5.     Punctuation and capitalization are up to the poet, and need not follow the rigid rules used in structuring sentences.
6.     A haiku does not have to rhyme, in fact usually it does not rhyme at all.
7.     It can include the repetition of words or sounds.

Contest Rules and Regulations

How are you coping during this trying time? Create a Japanese-style poem called a haiku (a 3-line, 17-syllable poem: lines 1 and 3 have 5 syllables; line 2 has 7 syllables) to share your experiences.
The contest is open to students in grades 3 and up, as well as adults. Poems submitted by those in high school or older will be judged by members of the Greenwich Pen Women. The poems will be judged on originality and emotional resonance.

Prizes

     •    All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.
• The writer of the top poem in each age/grade category will receive a $25 gift card to Diane's Books.
Rules:
     • Your poem must describe how you feel about the COVID-19 pandemic.
     • Poems will be accepted beginning Monday, April 13, through Monday, June 1. Winners will be announced on Monday, June 15.
     • Poems must follow the haiku style.
     • Poem content should be either G or PG.
     • Only one poem per email, but you can enter up to three poems.
     • You do not have to be from Greenwich to submit a poem.

How to Submit Your Poem

Step 1: E-mail the poem to: poem@perrotlibrary.org using the Subject Line: “POETRY CONTEST (YOUR NAME)" Note: It's best if your poem is part of the email itself, and not included as a separate attachment.
Step 2: To qualify for a prize, the text of your e-mail must contain all the following information:
     a: Your full name, street mailing address, your phone number, your email address;
     b: Your age - or (if shy) an approximate age - those under 18 years old must have the consent of a parent or guardian to submit a contest poem for possible publication;
     c. Your grade level, if a student.
     d. Title of your poem. (Does not count toward your 17 syllables.)
Note: The library will let you know when your email has been received. No more than ONE poem per email, but you may submit up to three poems. Submissions that do not follow all steps are not eligible for prize consideration.

Additional Information for Contestants

Usage: Contestants agree that the Library may publish their poems and name(s) in a booklet created after the contest.
Copyright: Your poem must be your original content.
License: You retain rights to your poem, but also, upon submitting a poem in this contest, you grant the Library a non-exclusive, royalty free, irrevocable license to reproduce your poem in a booklet created after the contest and to distribute the finished booklet to Library patrons at our public service desks.
Winners: The Library has no obligation to use submitted poems for any purpose whatsoever. The Library reserves the right not to choose a winner or winners (but that's highly unlikely).
Good luck!

Luminism: The Last Movement of the Renaissance
with artist and gallery owner Peter Layne Arguimbau

Perrot Memorial Library

Join us in learning about luminism, a style of 19th-century American landscape painting that focused on light and atmosphere, with local artist and gallery owner Peter Layne Arguimbau. The term "luminism" was coined in 1954 by John Baur, director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, who noticed a unique quality of light in four painters of the Hudson River School: Martin Johnson Heade, Sanford Robinson Gifford, Fitz Henry Lane, and John Frederick Kennett. Arguimbau will trace the roots of the luminist movement across history, from Rembrandt and other Dutch masters to the 20th century. This lecture is part of Arguimbau's upcoming book, Finding Rembrandt's Lost Secret: The Origin of Renaissance Art

Book Discussion on Machines Like Me, by Ian McEwan

Meet Adam. Out of the box he is an artificially intelligent man, bought for amusement by Charlie, a drifter, and used as a lure for Charlie's crush, Miranda, a liar. Adam grows from machine infancy to intellectual superiority as he ingests research, information, and theories of business, economies, and global history. What he does not understand--and what becomes the crux of his new life--are the emotional entanglements, irrational thinking, and ethical shortcuts that define human beings. As Charlie and Miranda begin to use Adam for their own purposes, we as readers wonder how human beings and humanoids will thrive. In Machines Like Me, author Ian McEwan (Atonement) weaves the noble views of Adam into the messy lives of Charlie and Miranda. To serve his purpose, the author plots out the tale on an alternative timeline in which Alan Turning--the computer genius who introduced artificial intelligence--did not commit suicide in 1954 and is instead alive in 1982 to witness what happens when humans by origin and humans by programming collide.

Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk. Seating for the event is limited!
