Upcoming Event: Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Bring your stuffed animal friends (dolls and other "babies" are allowed as well) to story time, tuck them in, and see what adventures they had when you pick them up the next day! 

Story time will be at 4 PM on Tuesday, December 10th.

Upcoming Event: Young Strings Workshop

Calling all Young Strings Players! 

Bring your instruments and learn the secrets of becoming a good strings student. This workshop, presented by the Young Artists Philharmonic, will review basic skills such as:

-How to tune your instrument

-How to take care of your instrument (especially during the cold winter months)

-How to hold and rosin your bow

-How many minutes you should practice each day to achieve best results

Darwin Shen, professional violinist and conductor of the Young Artists Philharmonic Young Strings Ensemble, will lead this workshop and help young strings students become confident string players.

Perrot welcomes author Teru Clavel for an insightful discussion of her book World Class: A Mother's Journey Halfway Around the Globe in Search of the Best Education for her Children. An education consultant, Clavel spent 10 years in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong with her three children. There, she saw firsthand how Asian schools differ from their American counterparts, which gave her a new perspective on the challenges of education in the U.S. Clavel offers advice for parents who want to ensure their children become lifelong learners and receive an education that is truly world-class.

Please join us for an informative evening with Anne Roland Lee, Assistant Professor of Nutritional Medicine in the Department of Medicine and the Institute for Human Nutrition at Columbia University and the dietitian for the Celiac Disease Center. A well-respected expert on gluten-free living, Ms. Lee will offer clever tips and ideas on how to navigate a gluten-free Thanksgiving. This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear from an authority on nutrition who has developed numerous educational materials on the gluten-free diet for patients and both clinical and food service professionals.

Join us for a discussion with author Patricia Walsh Chadwick on her first book, a memoir entitled Little Sister, that chronicles her unorthodox upbringing. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, Leonard Feeney, a controversial Catholic priest, founded a religious community called The Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This is where the author, her parents, and four siblings, lived a life shielded from the outside world-- without television, radio, newspapers, or any exposure to the events of the day. Little Sister is a tale of resilience and grace that, in riveting prose, describes a surreal childhood and does so without rancor or self-pity.

Upcoming Event: Family Storytelling Concert featuring Tim Lowry

Perrot Memorial Library is proud to present an afternoon of storytelling in memory of our beloved Children's Librarians, Kate McClelland ("Mrs. Mac") and Kathy Krasniewicz ("Mrs. K"). Those who knew Kate and Kathy know how much storytelling was a part of their lives and how they used it to enchant and educate the youth of our community.

We are delighted that storyteller Tim Lowry will be joining us for this special family event, which will be held in Perrot's Children's Wing at 2 PM on Sunday, November 17th, 2019. No tickets are required, but seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. This event is recommended for families with children ages 5 and up.

Not unlike Mr. Toad's wild ride from the classic Wind in the Willows, storyteller Tim Lowry will take you on a road trip adventure in an exciting machine-- his grandfather's Model T Ford, to be exact. Dressed in a duster and goggles, Tim will invite you aboard the Tin Lizzie to hear stories from across the country. Folk tales, tall tales, trickster tales, and spook stories are all clearly marked on the map for a grand tour of these United States.

Summer Reading Wrap-up

Thanks to everyone who participated in Youth Services' 2019 summer reading program!

It was a fantastic year for summer reading-- 388 kids signed up and read 1,290 books in total!

This year, Perrot will make a donation based on each book read by our summer readers to the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, CT. Our donation is enough to pay for transportation for 30 students to visit the Museum!

If you were one of our very special participants, you can still keep track of the books you read, even though our "official" program has ended! You can either take your reading record home with you, or leave it here in the library. We will also continue to give out prizes for books read (while supplies last, so HURRY!).

We'd also like to give a special mention to our teen volunteers, who helped record books for our reading program participants. This year we had 66 volunteers, who together worked over 615 hours staffing our summer reading table. Thanks, guys!

And remember, we still have another month of summer left, so please KEEP READING!

Perrot's Summer Reading Club and Contest for Kids

Summer is here-- and that means it's time to sign up for Perrot's summer reading club! You can participate (and win prizes for reading!) going on NOW  through August 1st. The Summer Reading theme this year is A UNIVERSE OF STORIES.

To sign up for our summer reading club, simply visit our volunteer table by the computers in Youth Services. Our friendly teen volunteers will sign you up, tell you the rules and start a reading record for you. You'll also get to put your name up on our bulletin board! We'll keep your reading record here in the library. When you've read a book, tell a volunteer next time you're in the library and they'll write it in your reading record. After you read your first, third, and fifth books, you get a prize! Also, this year, for each book you read, Perrot will make a donation to the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport.

Parents, you can take home a reading record for children who are not yet reading independently. We have special sheets to record books you have read aloud with your child. Children get a sticker for each book they've read with a grown-up.

We're also having a contest this summer. During the first 4 weeks in July, we will have a new jar of candy at the desk each week. Guess how many candies are in the jar, and fill out a guess slip. Whoever's guess is closest wins the whole jar! (If more than one person guesses correctly, we will draw randomly from among all correct answers.)
