The latest book recommendations from the Reference Desk

What We're Reading at Perrot: New book recommendations from our Reference librarians

THE LOST EMPIRE OF ATLANTIS: HISTORY'S GREATEST MYSTERY REVEALED, BY GAVIN MENZIES

[Non-Fiction] Did we ever get over the idea of Atlantis really existing long, long ago? Not I. As a true believer, a trip to Santorini and Akroteri brought it home. Historian Gavin Menzies has taken the lore and lure surrounding this fabled civilization and brought it into more detail. He has gone from Minoans to Mayans, from the Mediterranean to the Great Lakes. Using DNA, metallurgy, navigation techniques, etc., he traces a fascinating path that connects so much of early history. This thoughtful book will stir your imagination. One reviewer says it is "as riveting as an Indiana Jones adventure."

Wondering what foods are great to put out for the food drive? Here are the top ten non-perishable foods requested by food banks:

  • Cereal
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Canned meals such as soups and chili
  • 100% juice
  • Peanut butter
  • Pasta sauce
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Canned protein such as tuna or chicken
  • Beans, canned or dry

The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive is a nationwide effort that provides food to local food banks and pantries that would otherwise be faced with depleted stocks during the summer months. Food banks across the country continue to experience record demand for emergency food assistance. Stamp Out Hunger is the nation's largest single-day food drive, having collected more than one billion pounds of food since its inception in 1993. During last year's drive, generous Americans donated over 70 million pounds of food!

WONDERSTRUCK
by Brian Selznick

Ben and Rose secretly wish their lives were different. Ben longs for the father he has never known. Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his mother's room, and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out alone on desperate quests to find what they are missing. Set fifty years apart, these two independent stories-- Ben's told in words, Rose's in pictures-- weave back and forth with mesmerizing symmetry. How they unfold and ultimately intertwine will surprise you, challenge you, and leave you breathless with wonder.
